Since we opened our doors in the summer of 2017, Boys & Girls Club of Greater Shasta has welcomed over 550 Club members to succeed while having fun in the variety of activities and programs offered at the Club. With professionally trained staff and world-class programs that include Power Hour homework assistance, Project Learn, Triple Play, Garden-to-Table, STEM, Passport to Manhood, Smart Girls, Torch Club, and the arts-- pottery, painting, mixed media, etc-- we are committed to achieving priority outcomes for youth: Academic Success, Good Character & Citizenship, and Healthy Lifestyles.

Our Learning Center supports programs such as Project Learn-- a nationally-recognized, education enhancement program with high-yield learning activities including literacy comprehension, tutoring, and STEM with an emphasize on parent involvement and the collaboration between Club and school professionals. These programs have been successful in engaging Club members, helping them develop greater confidence in their academic abilities, improving the quality and quantity of completed homework, and increasing school attendance rates.
Power Hour homework assistance helps Club members achieve academic success by providing homework help, tutoring, high-yield learning activities and encouraging members to become self-directed learners.
Dedicated Youth Development Professionals and volunteers supervise each session and help youth members complete their assignments for the day. When they finish their work, they may choose to participate in a variety of other engaging and educational activities to develop their skills even further.
Power Hour is a great opportunity for kids and teens to get their homework completed in a quiet place with support from trained, caring staff at a Boys & Girls Club.
STEM curriculum connects youth to science themes they encounter regularly. Special attention is paid to connections of theory and application and the common interactions members have with these scientific principles. It provides youth who might otherwise not have access to STEM experiences with simple, fun, hands-on activities. Exposure to science, technology, engineering, and math is critical during childhood when young people’s natural curiosity drives interest and builds capacity for success in these disciplines.
At the Club, we are excited to have the opportunity to incorporate a 3D printing element into our STEM program. This cutting-edge technology allows our members to become designers and creators, allowing their imagination to take form in a way that also promotes better spatial reasoning skills and 2D to 3D conversion understanding.
We have formed a strong partnership with the Siskiyou Land Trust that allows us to further enhance our Garden-to-Table Program, and ultimately, allows our Club members to connect with the community. The Siskiyou Land Trust has provided us with garden space, which included the construction of a safety fence, for the Garden-to-Table program. This ongoing program promotes healthy lifestyles and assists members in becoming responsible caretakers through gardening.
This program provides Club members with an opportunity to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine while engaging in agricultural practices on a small scale, learning about the responsibilities and impacts of land cultivation and building a cob oven to share with the community. The Club will be cultivating the entire garden. However, the majority of our harvest will be shared with the community, creating a community culture in the garden.
Triple Play: A Game Plan for the Mind, Body and Soul is BGCA’s proven dynamic health and wellness program that is designed to help youth create opportunities to take charge of their personal health and wellness.
Healthy Habits (Mind): Addresses the ways an individual’s health behaviors are influenced by personal beliefs and exposure to positive modeling.
Daily Challenges (Body): Intentional focus on physical literacy: Ability - Increasing capability in basic movement skills and overall fitness; Confidence -the knowledge of the ability to play sports or enjoy other physical activities and Motivation- the intrinsic enthusiasm for physical activity for members to be physically active for life.
Social Recreation (Soul): Emphasis on social and emotional development, or the social, cognitive, and behavioral skills that youth need to be healthy and productive. There is an explicit focus on emotional regulation, healthy relationships (with self and others), and responsible decision-making.
SMART Girls is a small-group health, fitness, prevention/education and self-esteem enhancement program designed to meet the developmental needs of girls in three age groups, spanning ages 8 to 18. Through dynamic sessions, participatory activities, field trips and mentoring opportunities with adult women, Club girls explore their own and societal attitudes and values as they build skills for eating right, staying physically fit, getting good health care and developing positive relationships with peers and adults.
Passport to Manhood
Passport to Manhood represents a targeted effort to engage young boys in discussions and activities that reinforce character, leadership and positive behavior. Each participant receives a “passport” to underscore the notion that he is on a personal journey of maturation and growth. Each of the program’s 14 sessions use interactive activities to focus on a specific aspect of character and manhood. It also includes a service project where boys learn the importance of giving back to the community.
Torch Club is a “club within the Club,” helping to meet the special character-development needs of younger adolescents at a critical stage in their life.
A Torch Club is a powerful vehicle through which young people develop and strengthen their 21st-century leadership skills, giving them a firm foundation of good character and integrity. Torch Club members elect officers and work together to implement projects in the four focus areas: service to Club and community; education; health and fitness; and social recreation.
Arts & Crafts
Giving Kids a Voice through the Arts. These programs are designed to foster creativity in young people, and give them outlets for self-expression. From pottery to painting, our arts programs have something that will inspire everyone.
Our partnership with Great Northern provides nutritious snacks and meals to members at the Club through our summer lunch program and the food pantry during the school year. However, with such an important endeavor, support from the community is always needed and greatly appreciated.
Our goal is that no kid leaves the Club hungry due to the food scarcity in our county. Siskiyou County is the second highest in California for food insecurity among children, according to KidsData.org, so we are grateful to be able to offer this important service to Siskiyou County’s youth which also allows them to better focus on their academic success.
We aim to take this initiative a step further by providing Club members with the opportunity to learn about healthy eating habits, and how to prepare nutritious meals.
The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Shasta is committed to bringing fun and exciting programs to Club members for both the winter and summer seasons, with the shared goal of making the outdoors more accessible to the youth of Siskiyou County.
The kids who need us most, who might otherwise not be able to afford these programs, get to experience all the wonders of our natural surroundings through skiing and snowboarding program in the winter, and mountain biking in the summer.
